Mono vs Stereo sfx - rules vs opinions

Hi folks

There’s a lot of opinions on Reddit about whether game sounds should be mono or stereo.

My understanding is as follows:

  • Stereo is more immersive, depending on envelopment
  • Mono is more efficient for 3D sounds
  • Mono helps the player localise sounds more easily
  • Phasing is less of an issue with Mono events with crossfades

So Mono seems best for 3D, although Stereo sounds can be used perhaps for momentary sounds for extra impact.

So yeah, would love to hear your thoughts.
Right now I’m making car Engine sounds in Mono.
