Crackling/clicking noise in FMOD 2.01.11

Hello,

I’m experiencing an issue with FMOD 2.01.11.

When running my project in the Unity Editor with Live Update enabled, a crackling noise started appearing - similar to the sound of a faulty physical audio jack. I tried switching between multiple output devices, but the issue persisted.

I used the FMOD Profiler to diagnose the problem and found that when I record a session and then play it back in Waveform mode, the issue becomes significantly worse - the noise becomes constant and continuous.

Notably, CPU usage never exceeds 15% at peak, and the number of voices and instances is well within normal limits.

I initially thought the problem was in my Unity project, then in my FMOD project, but I discovered that even in a completely empty FMOD project - with just a single event and a single parameter - the issue reproduces in the Profiler when playing back in Waveform mode. I’ve included a video link below where you can hear the noise in this empty test project:

As a comparison, I created an identical empty project in FMOD 2.03.13, and the issue did not occur there. However, upgrading our production project to a newer version would require a significant amount of time and effort, so I’m hoping to find a solution that works with FMOD 2.01.11.

I should also mention that I have completely uninstalled all versions of FMOD from my PC, removed all leftover folders (including %AppData% and %LocalAppData%), and performed a clean reinstall - unfortunately, this did not help.

Our project has been using FMOD 2.01.11 with Unity 6 for a long time, and this issue only started appearing recently. Previously, everything worked fine.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Hi,

Thank you for the information and the video.

Unfortunately, I was not able to reproduce the issue with Unity 6.3 FMOD integration 2.01.11 Studio 2.01.23. Is it possible to test the latest Studio version? The Unity integration will still be compatible as they are the same major version.

Unfortunately, as 2.01 is no longer supported it is difficult to back port fixes. Just to confirm this is only happening when connected to LU on PC or another platform?

Hi Connor,

Thank you for your response.

I have tested on both Windows and Android builds. The bug reproduced on both platforms. The FMOD Studio version shown in the video is 2.01.11, and as I mentioned earlier, in version 2.03.13 the bug does not seem to reproduce.

What’s interesting is that this issue appeared quite recently, and there seems to have been no obvious trigger for it.

In any case, our team is now in the process of migrating to version 2.03.13, and I hope the bug will not be present there.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Best regards,
Vsevolod A.
