Requesting a better Distortion effect

FMOD Studio is great but there is one thing that it’s lacking in the effects department and that is a usable distortion effect. The current one technically works but is very hard to use when designing sounds, before you hear any amount of distortion you have had to raise the output to an insane degree. Then you have to manually turn down the track level to compensate. This is very annoying and hard to control.

I wish there where more controls on the plugin itself to add distortion in the same way any VST would where the signal is automatically balanced. Right now I have to add distortion in my DAW and that limits the amount of design I can actually do in FMOD. For horror games distortion is a very useful tool.

I would really appreciate a better distortion plugin

There is a way to make the distortion a little more manageable in Studio, although I’m not disputing that the effect does sound a bit pants (sorry guys but have to be honest!): automate the distortion and a gain plugin with the same parameter then draw a curve to keep the output level under control as you ramp up the distortion:

The above keeps the output level roughly the same. If you’re in 2.03+ you could automate the dry/wet of the distortion instead:

Make “Knob” a local parameter, and turn that into an effect chain and now you can quickly drop it on different events to give yourself one knob control of distortion without risking blowing out your ear drums by accident.

Thanks for the suggestion! We’ve had a number of requests for a more fully featured distortion effect with gain compensation, different distortion types, multiple bands, etc. and I’ve noted your interest on our feature tracker.
