Application version best practice

Hi, I now have several versions of fmod 2.02.xx on my mac.
Was just hoping to get some advice on best practice with these and have a few questions.

  • Should I remove/un-install older versions
  • Can I move old versions into a different folder in the Applications directory
  • If after removing a version, on opening a project, fmod tells me it was created using on older version, will it tell me exactly which version

How are other people handling this for old projects?

Cheers

You don’t have to. There’s rarely much point in keeping multiple patch versions of the same major version around if you’re not using them, though.

Sure, if you like. It won’t cause any problems.

As of the time of writing (November of 2024), FMOD Studio does not tell you exactly which older version of FMOD Studio a project was created in when you attempt to load the project.

That being said, it shouldn’t be that hard to work out. FMOD Studio projects are both backwards- and forwards-compatible within each major version, so you could open a project made in version 2.02.24 in version 2.02.05 without trouble, and vice versa. This means that you only need to try opening an old project in one version of 2.03.xx, one version of 2.02.xx, one version of 2.01.xx, and so on until if you find a version that can open it. In your case, where you have multiple versions of 2.02.xx installed, any of them will be able to open a project made in any patch version of 2.00.xx without trouble.

In addition, if you attempt to open a project made in an older major version of FMOD Studio, FMOD Studio will give you the option to migrate the project to the version of FMOD Studio you’re opening it in.

Great, thanks Joseph. Much appreciated.
