Play audio in edit mode

I have a project where I need to play audio in edit mode while setting up cinematics and doing lipsyncs.

I just started checking out FMOD so I am totally new to the framework, but from what I can see there doesnt seem to be a way I can do this, or is there?

No our integration doesn’t support audio through the scene viewer. We may add support in a later version.

Has there been any updates on this since 2015? I’ve checked elsewhere but haven’t found anything.

Being able to setup and preview soundscapes in-scene, through the Unity editor, would be hugely beneficial.

Just to confirm, is your main request the ability to preview spatial audio directly in the Unity editor without entering Play mode? If so, could you share a bit more detail about your workflow and use cases so we can better understand the request?

The main thing I’m hoping for is the ability to preview FMOD audio directly in the Unity editor while in Edit Mode, without having to hit Play. There are really two sides to this.

On the world / scene side, Unity’s built-in audio already lets you drop in a looping sound and hear how it spatializes as you move the Scene camera. It’d be a huge help if FMOD events could work the same way — where the Scene camera acts like a listener so you can “walk the space” and immediately hear ambience and emitters. That alone would save a lot of time when laying out soundscapes, especially when figuring out the right spatializer settings to use.

On the cinematic / timeline side, it would be equally valuable to hear FMOD events while scrubbing or playing back Unity Timelines in Edit Mode. That would make it possible to line up lipsync, animations, and cutscenes to audio before pressing Play, and it could really smooth out the round-trip with FMOD and our animation tools, since we’d be able to immediately audition and line up audio and visuals.

Even a bare-bones version — previewing sounds in the scene and timeline cues being able to trigger FMOD events — would cover the bulk of the use cases and make day-to-day work a lot faster.
